Happy Mother's Day: Red-tailed Hawk's Nest Part 3

My wife got to enjoy Mother's Day by working, so I figured I would take a break from the BeakGeek.org project and go visit the hawk's nest.

I have to admit I was getting a bit impatient with the hawks - starting to wonder when I would get to see the eyasses. I first spotted them building/improving the nest back in late March, so figured we would see the little ones any time. And today was the first day I got to see the three of them.

They look pretty fresh to me, so I am guessing they have hatched over the last few days. I spent several hours watching the nest and both hawks hunted close to home. I even had the pleasure of sharing my vantage point with a couple snakes today. I had noticed that my favorite spot near the nest was littered with small burrows, and figured I would get to see some critters sooner or later. As I am not a snake guy I am still not sure what kind they were, and neither of them would come out of their holes very far to let me get a good look; that part did not break my heart.

I look forward to seeing how the three eyasses get along over the next few months. More to come.

Happy Mother's Day!
